Disc and Spine Issues

There is a myriad of spinal disc related issues, each one with the potential to be debilitating and awful. The most common is a bulging disc; however, we have seen and treated more than just bulging discs.

Some of the disc issues we see in our office include:

  • Bulging / Herniated / Ruptured discs
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Spinal fusions / hardware in the spine
  • Spondylolisthesis / Spondylosis
  • Pinched nerves
  • Scoliosis / Kyphosis / Lordosis
  • Reverse neck curve

With each of these dis-eases (we like to use dis-ease because your body is not at ease when in pain), certain massage precautions are taken into account based on the client and their needs and history. We have posted a great article about herniations and bulges within the discs, and there is still more information that can be useful to you.

Can massage heal your disc degeneration?

While any massage therapy cannot help you grow back discs, heal the disc to its original state, or fix a rupture, deep tissue massage can help with loosening the muscles around the area or give relief to pinched nerves. In some cases, a rehabilitative massage can allow a more natural alignment of your bones, allowing the nerve pathways to open up and function better.

There are definitely some back issues that massage can really only provide relief until surgery. But it can help provide relief until surgery. With severe herniations or serious ruptured discs, massage can give a small respite until necessary surgery can happen. Some of these issues can cause permanent damage, and we do not want you to have permanent damage.

There have been many cases within Under Pressure Therapeutics where someone has held off on surgery and it was the right decision. Please know that we are not saying to disregard what your doctor has suggested nor that we know more than your doctor. We just believe that surgery should be the absolute last option for you.
