Taking care of yourself when you’re carrying a baby is an absolute necessity. We cannot stress enough how important it is to receive regular prenatal massage and other self-care practices during those formative months. Prenatal massage has been proven to aid in the life of an expecting mother. Expecting mothers go through so many changes that make it difficult to sleep, keep food down, and much more.
Benefits of Prenatal Massage:
When you normally come in for a prenatal massage, you lay on your stomach for us to work your back. Once you get to a certain size as an expecting mother, you obviously can’t do that. We have 2 options for your comfort: prenatal pillows, or side-lying position.
- The prenatal pillows have cut-outs for the stomach to hang down without putting pressure on the baby. Whether you’re pregnant or not, these pillows are so comfortable!
- The side-lying position is just as it sounds: you lay on your side, with a body pillow to cuddle and another pillow to support your head. Either way, we work to ensure your comfort.
What is Prenatal Massage?
At Under Pressure Therapeutics, we have a few options for prenatal massages, the most common being our prenatal pillows. These bolsters and supports allow the baby belly to hang down with minimal pressure so mom can lay on her stomach without squishing the baby. This allows the Licensed Massage Therapist to massage almost as though there is no baby belly. Now, some women still don’t feel comfortable with the prenatal pillows. It can be that their baby belly is so large (every baby belly is different depending upon the mom and the baby) or it sticks straight out or she just feels more comfortable on her side. We can offer a body pillow to cuddle with another pillow to support the head while laying on your side. We can still massage pretty much anything you might need; it’s just a slightly adjusted way of massaging. Whatever your preference might be, we just need to know so you can be as comfortable as you can.

There are certain acupressure points that should be avoided with a prenatal massage, so it’s important to let your massage therapist know as soon as you know that you are expecting.
