The Protocol We Use to Help You the Most

If you go to a spa, you’re going to get a great massage! You will feel relaxed; they might get you some products that help your skin stay hydrated, feel softer and more supple, and look luminescent; it will be a great time.

 

However, if you suffer from chronic pain, limited range of motion, tension headaches, compensatory pains from a previous injury, or want more out of your massage, you need to see someone who has the skills and protocols to help you recover and feel better. We use a rehabilitation protocol that helps you to reeducate your muscles, revitalize your tissues, and connects you to your body in a new way.

 

The first thing we need to do is normalize soft tissue dysfunction. Dysfunction literally means painful function, so just because you can still move relatively normally doesn’t mean you don’t have pain. To help normalize the soft tissues, we will use trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage techniques to make sure your soft tissues don’t have something more serious going on. During this time, we might want to use cryotherapy or heat treatments to help your tissues calm down.

 

Once we have determined your tissues are healthy, we will address your range of motion and see if we can improve aspects of it. We might suggest certain stretches to do that will help your specific issues. If you want to get more stretches for your issues, talk with a personal trainer or a yoga teacher to make sure your stretches are appropriate and help you. During your sessions, we might stretch you out or see where you are feeling a stretch.

 

After we have determined your range of motion and what we need to do to help you increase that (if necessary), we want to work at restoring proper movement patterns. This is done through neuromuscular therapy which looks for specific areas within your movements to address.

 

Once all of that has been addressed or started to get addressed, strengthening the muscles and muscle groups is extremely important to retain the benefits. We cannot give you strengthening exercises (except Torrance, who is a Certified Personal Trainer), but we have some friends over at the Kettlebell Method and another great personal trainer with Greg Bobby. If your specific issues require, you may want to see a Physical Therapist as well. While you are restrengthening, it is important to still receive massage, as we help keep you moving and can ensure your strength training won’t cause new issues and help you recover from the new workouts.

Young Living with Oola

Dr. Dave and Dr. Troy are two chiropractors who wrote a book called ” Oola: Finding Balance in an Unbalanced World” and focus on establishing balance between the 7 necessary Fs in life: Fitness, Finance, Family, Friends, Fun, Field, and Faith. Establishing this balance takes a lot of work, dedication, and constant reevaluation of the status quo. This book goes through each one and helps you evaluate where you are strong and where you need work. It helps you recognize detrimental thought forms and limiting beliefs, as well as teach you tangible lessons to really help you.

Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular therapy is a bodywork technique used primarily to asses and correct postural distortions within the body and retrain the muscles on correct alignment and movement patterns. This type of therapy is utilised by massage therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and osteopaths to correct postural distortions and bring relief of chronic pain for clients.
A neuromuscular massage as performed by a Licensed Massage Therapist varies in depth of pressure, passive and active movement (client moving the muscle or therapist), and what other modalities are used in conjunction with NMT (neuromuscular therapy). Each school of massage has their own way of teaching NMT; however, every therapist should know the basics of NMT and how it can benefit their client.
Neuromuscular therapy can also be described as a deep tissue technique because it works through the layers of muscle and fascia (a thixotropic connective tissue that wraps around muscles, individual muscle fibres and layers between muscle and skin) to bring deep relief to chronically tight or taught muscles.
While the basic Swedish style massage focuses on relaxation and flow, a neuromuscular massage will feel deeper and include focus on muscles that can contribute to a postural distortion rather than just the muscles that are in pain. If a client presents with rounded shoulders and just wants work on their understandably painful back and rhomboids, a neuromuscular therapist will also suggest working on the front to the body to relieve the tension on the back of their body.
In the case of a rounded forward posture, contributing muscles can include pectorals,coracobrachialis, diaphragm, iliopsoas, and the scalene/ scm neck muscles. All of these muscles contract and tighten down on the front of the body during daily activities of sitting, typing, carrying, reaching, driving etc. to give a chronically rounded posture and thus cause pain between the shoulders, neck, and mid to low back. It is a Licensed Massage Therapist’s job to understand this relationship between the front and back of the body and take a holistic approach in their clients care rather than treating them as separate entities.
A relaxation massage is a wonderful thing to receive but if you are suffering from a chronic issue or you can never seem to get relief from your painful shoulders, back, neck etc. then think about asking your Licensed Massage Therapist to add in some neuromuscular techniques to correct these issues and bring your posture back into alignment.

Young Living with some Basics

I just want to talk about some of the oils that I use in my everyday life, and why.
Stress Away. Who doesn’t have stress? This calming blend uplifts as well as calms. It’s a mix of Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea, and Lavender, and it really invites peace and tranquility. I put it on my shoulders, as I often feel stress there before anywhere else.
Patchouli relaxes and decreases inflammation. It can clarify thoughts and help you discard insecurities. It can also be used as a dietary aid. I put it on my collar bones, just a little bit.
Valor is one of my all-time favorites! The blend empowers and encourages while keeping you feeling grounded. I put it on my feet to keep me grounded, or on my throat when I feel like I need extra help communicating.
Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint are my bread an butter. If I had to choose only 3 oils, these 3 would be it! Lavender is calming and helps with cuts, scrapes, and bruises; lemon is super detoxifying; peppermint helps with soreness, headaches, and more. I’ll put a drop of lemon and peppermint in hot water if I’m having a stomach ache. I’ll put a drop of lavender on my joints when they are achy or over my heart if I’m getting anxious.
If you had to only choose one oil, it would be Thieves. This combination of oils got its name because during the dreaded plague, spice traders would dip their bandanas in a combination similar to this and wrap their faces with it to prevent getting the plague while they broke into houses that had been boarded up because of infected people and steal their valuables. These thieves would not get sick! Young Living has a whole line of Thieves products. I use the oil as a dietary supplement if I’m getting sick or the spray in my throat if I’m getting sick. I use the toothpaste and the mouthwash. I also have the household cleaner you can use for stoves, countertops, and my husband has even used it to clean his car tires! The possibilities are endless.

Find a Licensed Massage Therapist

We are proud of each of us being a Licensed Massage Therapist with the State of Colorado. Why? What are the benefits of seeing a Licensed Massage Therapist?
Not every state regulates the Massage Therapy profession. Each state also has different requirements for someone to get licensed as a Massage Therapist. Many states require a certain amount of continuing education in order to renew a license. The state of Colorado requires 500 hours of education and for an individual to take the MBLEx, the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam.
The MBLEx is a standardized test that challenges each aspiring Massage Therapist on their knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, Kinesiology, Pathology, Psychology, Client Assessment and Treatment, Massage Modalities, Ethics, Boundaries, and Guidelines for Professional Practice. This is a huge exam that most Massage Therapists have stressed over for months before taking it. In order to take the exam, you have to show proof that you’ve attended an accredited school for Therapeutic Massage and that your education meets the state requirements.

Young Living with Chamomile

Young Living actually has 2 types of chamomile: Roman and German. Both look similar–adorable little white flowers with a bright yellow center. Both have many similar benefits, such as increasing relaxation, calming the nerves and mind, and tasting yummy in teas. Both are anti-inflammatory. Both are a natural anesthetic. Both naturally grow in Utah. Both help with insomnia and skin conditions. Both from the Asteraceae Botanical Family. But there are some slight differences.
Roman Chamomile:
  • Naturally grows in France
  • Anti-spasmodic, anti-parasitic, and antibacterial
  • Relieves ADHD, anxiety, depression, and restlessness
  • Helps minimize irritability and stabilize mood
  • Helps combat nervousness
German Chamomile:
  • Naturally grows in Idaho, Egypt, and Hungary
  • Powerful antioxidant, anti-tumoral
  • Promotes digestion, liver, and gallbladder health
  • Inhibits lipid peroxidation
  • Used to help treat the liver, arteriosclerosis, nervous tension, arthritis and carpal tunnel

Deep Tissue vs. Swedish Massage

You might have heard we specialize in Deep Tissue Massage; in fact, you might see us because we specialize in deep tissue. However, many people don’t understand the difference between Deep Tissue Massage and a Swedish Massage.

 

Swedish Massage focuses on relaxation. Using 5 different types of strokes, Swedish Massage doesn’t typically use a huge amount of pressure to achieve its goals. It’s only called Swedish Massage in English and Dutch speaking countries and in Hungary; everywhere else, it’s called “classic” massage. The majority of clients who seek a Swedish Massage also want deep pressure. While technically, that would classify the massage as a Deep Tissue Massage, we understand what the client means. We can integrate deeper pressure into a standard massage.

 

A Deep Tissue Massage focuses on manipulating the deeper tissues of the body, specifically the fascia and muscles. Deep Tissue Massage has been proven to be a viable option for many different ailments. Livestrong posted an article about the benefits, including:

We specialize in Deep Tissue Massage Therapy at Under Pressure Therapeutics because, while we want to help people relax, our mission is to serve Fort Collins with quality massage therapy services, and we believe the best way to achieve this goal is through deep tissue massage. By giving Deep Tissue Massage, we offer our clients an opportunity to recover from surgeries with breaking up scar tissue, to decrease chronic pain by stretching fascia, and to help athletic training and exercise recovery.
Please note that Deep Tissue Massage does not exclusively mean pain! And you shouldn’t be writhing in pain, either. This is wherecommunicating with your Licensed Massage Therapist is key! When giving a beneficial, therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage, we want you at about a 6 or 7 on a pain scale out of 10. We want it to be a little high, but we want you to be able to breathe through it. If you’re not breathing, then you’re not getting benefits–you’re just paying us to torture you. A 6 or 7 is kind of a “hurts so good” kind of pain. If you can breathe through it, great! If you are tensing up the rest of your body to “deal” with the pain, not okay. As a tip: when it hurts, take a big, deep breath in, and see if your Massage Therapist does need to lighten up, or if you can breathe through it. If you immediately start wincing, that is NOT okay!
Deep Tissue Massage is the best option for setting the body on course of recovery for a full, pain-free life. If you noticed, we work within YOUR pain tolerance–a 6 or 7 for one person is another person’s 25, which is another person’s 4. Don’t feel “bad” for telling us it’s too much! Don’t apologize to us if you can’t handle that much pressure! That’s what YOUR body needs! And we work to give you what your body needs!

Young Living with Peppermint

Peppermint oil has been used in healing remedies since 1500 BC. It has been used in Greek and Roman mythology and used throughout cultures throughout the world.
Most people know that you should drink peppermint tea when your stomach doesn’t feel well. And I think most of us know that many topical analgesics like Tiger Balm smell of peppermint, not to mention the respiratory benefits from Vick’s Vapor rub and the like. It doesn’t take a scientist to tell you that peppermint is great for your respiratory system–you just have to pay a visit to the Celestial Seasonings factory in Boulder and spend a minute in the famous peppermint room!
A short list of what peppermint is good for:
  • Relieving symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Heartburn
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Congestion
  • Menstural problems
  • Liver / Gallbladder problems
WebMD has a whole list of ailments peppermint oil can help. It also lists some of the side effects, including burning on the skin. Peppermint oil is quite powerful, so be sure to use it with a carrier oil (jojoba oil, avocado oil, etc.) when applying to your skin, and make sure you don’t get it too close to your eyes. You can also use it as a dietary supplement, but make sure it won’t interfere with any current medications you are taking.
