The Story Behind Thieves

The story of Thieves oil has always been an example of the evolution of medicine and and example of how many old medicinals have fallen into obscurity. Historically, doctors would use herbs and plant compounds to heal and protect from ailments.
During the terror of the Bubonic Plague, doctors wore an old type of hazmat suit, a protective suit created by the 17th-century physician Charles de l’Orme, someone multiple French kings had trusted. Doctor’s Review described it well:
“Made of a canvas outer garment coated in wax, as well as waxed leather pants, gloves, boots and hat, the costume became downright scary from the neck up. A dark leather hood and mask were held onto the face with leather bands and gathered tightly at the neck so as to not let in any noxious, plague-causing miasmas that might poison the wearer. Eyeholes were cut into the leather and fitted with glass domes.”
The masks they wore had long, curved snouts, and the doctors would fill the snouts with herbs to combat the smell of those infected by the plague. Not only was this used to protect them from the awful stench, but they also used it to prevent contracting the horrible disease. Most people believed that the plague was being spread by poisonous vapors in the air. Thus, the Medico della Peste was created.
Doctors aren’t thieves, I know you’re thinking this! I’m supposed to be telling the story of thieves, not doctors!
Well, the doctors kind of got the idea from a group of French thieves, who were spice traders. These spice traders understood the medical properties of natural herbs and spices better than anyone. It’s been said that they would soak bandanas in a combination of specific spices to wrap around their faces while they loot the houses infected by the plague. No one else would go in there for fear of succumbing to the terrifying disease.
The French thieves used Four Thieves Vinegar, or Marseille Vinegar. There have been various recipes floating around, but one particular recipe stated that it is a combination of rosemary, sage, lavender, rue, camphor, garlic, cloves, and distilled wine vinegar. By combining the different ideas of the various recipes and using current research on plant compounds, Gary D. Young, the founder of Young Living Essential Oils, has fine tuned it to what he believes is the most powerful combination of plant compounds to combat most viruses, fungi, and bacteria.
Essential oils are the blood of the plant–they’re volatile oils that have compounded medicinal properties of the plant. “Research conducted at Weber State University, as well as other documented research, indicates that most viruses, fungi, and bacteria cannot live in the presence of many essential oils, especially those high in phenols, carcacrol, thymol, and terpenes. This, perhaps, offers a modern explanation why the Old Testament prophet Moses used aromatic substances to protect theIsraelites from the plagues that decimated ancient Egypt. It may also help us understand why a notorious group of thieves, reputed to be spice traders and perfumers, was protected from the Black Plague as they robbed the bodies of the dead during the 15th century.” (Essential Oils Desk Reference, 4th Edition, p6)”
The Young Living brand Thieves oil is a combination of rosemary, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, and lemon oils, each having individual, profound healing properties. These oils create a delightful aroma that also aids in preventing sicknesses and helping you heal from a sickness.

Young Living with some Basics

I just want to talk about some of the oils that I use in my everyday life, and why.
Stress Away. Who doesn’t have stress? This calming blend uplifts as well as calms. It’s a mix of Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea, and Lavender, and it really invites peace and tranquility. I put it on my shoulders, as I often feel stress there before anywhere else.
Patchouli relaxes and decreases inflammation. It can clarify thoughts and help you discard insecurities. It can also be used as a dietary aid. I put it on my collar bones, just a little bit.
Valor is one of my all-time favorites! The blend empowers and encourages while keeping you feeling grounded. I put it on my feet to keep me grounded, or on my throat when I feel like I need extra help communicating.
Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint are my bread an butter. If I had to choose only 3 oils, these 3 would be it! Lavender is calming and helps with cuts, scrapes, and bruises; lemon is super detoxifying; peppermint helps with soreness, headaches, and more. I’ll put a drop of lemon and peppermint in hot water if I’m having a stomach ache. I’ll put a drop of lavender on my joints when they are achy or over my heart if I’m getting anxious.
If you had to only choose one oil, it would be Thieves. This combination of oils got its name because during the dreaded plague, spice traders would dip their bandanas in a combination similar to this and wrap their faces with it to prevent getting the plague while they broke into houses that had been boarded up because of infected people and steal their valuables. These thieves would not get sick! Young Living has a whole line of Thieves products. I use the oil as a dietary supplement if I’m getting sick or the spray in my throat if I’m getting sick. I use the toothpaste and the mouthwash. I also have the household cleaner you can use for stoves, countertops, and my husband has even used it to clean his car tires! The possibilities are endless.
Young Living also has a line of supplements, products, and recently launched a line called Vitality, which is specifically designed for dietary and cooking use.

Young Living with…. Thieves

We are not saying that to be young, you must run with thieves. Thieves oil is a blend from Young Living, and is their most popular seller. They have a whole line of just Thieves products. So what makes Thieves oil so amazing that everyone wants it for cleaning products, toothpaste, mouthwash, and more?
Thieves oil, as described by Young Living, was “inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves, who formulated a special aromatic blend composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals to use while robbing the dead and dying.” These robbers would use this blend to loot and plunder those dying of the plague, and they would not get sick!
This blend has been university tested and proven to be 99.9% effective in killing airborne bacteria. Some of the products that Young Living offers specifically with this oil are:
  • Thieves Cleansing Bar Soap
  • Thieves Foaming Hand Soap
  • Thieves Household Cleaner
  • Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier
  • Thieves Spray
  • Thieves Wipes
  • Thieves Hard and Soft Lozenges
  • Thieves Dental Floss
  • Thieves Fresh Essence Plus Mouthwash
  • Thieves AromaBright Toothpaste
  • Thieves Dentarome Plus Toothpaste
  • Thieves Dentraome Ultra Toothpaste
  • Thieves Essential Oil
Pretty amazing, huh?
Personally, I make my own face wash using Thieves oil because it does kill so much bacteria. During the sick season, I make sure I have it diffusing in my apartment at the very least.

If you wanted to get EVERY oil they have, which is over 120 different oils, you could pay the nice sum of $2,500, then I would suggest that. However, most of us don’t have that kind of cash. They do, however, sell a premium starter kit, which has the 10 oils listed above as well as a Stress Away, which is another amazing oil, for only $150, and that includes a diffuser.
